Small Changes - Day 1

September 28th, 2009 at 09:28 pm

I started going back through my budget to the beginning of the year and realized that I've become really sloppy and undisciplined.

The first: I've been spending an average of $65/month eating at work! It's so easy to get breakfast and/or lunch there. I can use my id and have it deducted directly from my paycheck, so I don't feel it as much as when I pay cash. And I'm NOT a morning person,so getting out of bed 15 minutes earlier to eat at home is not happening.

I need to put a stop to it, so today I grabbed something quick at home and brought lunch. The key is having stuff I can just grab in a hurry. So my goal is to not eat at work unless I have to go to lunch with someone for a meeting, which only happens once or twice a month...

One step closer! Do you have a drawer at work you can stock with edibles?

    Great plan!

I'm with Lux--having a few things at work like cheerios (can eat them dry), mixed nuts and dried-soup mix means I usually have a breakfast, snack or lunch available in a pinch, though I prefer bringing something more exciting from home.

If you have a refrigerator that no one steals from, bring cheap tv dinners and put them in the freezer section in a bag. I've done that before.

I know what you mean. I was paying $1.00 a day for my oatmeal (at the hospital cafeteria) and last week I started making it at home again. You know you can freeze it. I have a microwave and frig at work so I am back to cooking and freezing and packing my breakfast and lunch every day. Good luck!

I'm with you and I started several years ago with bringing in things and leaving them in my desk. but i also recently discovered that I can nuke an egg in the microwave for a sandwich (scrambled) in less than a minute. add some toast and a piece of bacon cooked at the same time as the egg and i have breakfast out the door in 5 minutes. who knew it was so easy!

it will really be nice on cold winter mornings.

I have slipped too lately. I had gotten real good at keeping stuff at work to eat, but then it ran out and I haven't replaced it! I find if I keep it stocked at work than I eat it...just make sure you have a little variety. Since I am not a planner, I never have to think about what is for breakfast/lunch before I leave home.

Oooh, it was like that bad in college too. We had these new student IDs where you can also put money on the account and buy food off of it. They were also putting in vending machines that accepted the student IDs (which really worked more like a debit card).

Very addicting, and it also didn't help that I wasn't frugal back then.
