Work stress (not financial)

January 19th, 2012 at 12:44 pm

This is not a financial post, but a few things about work (and non-work) stress have come up with others this week and have been weighing on my mind.

We're in the middle of a huge project at work. Started late Nov, going to late February. Late nights, early mornings, weekends, the whole bit. I've been holding my own, thanks to my hubby and kids who have stepped up in a big way, but I can see the toll it's taking on others, including one team member who had to take some time off this week because the stress was so great. Reading everyone's blogs on this site it seems that many are swamped at work as well. I'm concerned that this is becoming the "new normal", which isn't healthy at all.

On the other hand, I have a good friend who's been unemployed since June, 2009. She has exhausted her severance and unemployment and has been looking for work for a while, with no success. She posted an entry on Facebook earlier this week after finding out that she didn't get a job she applied for and I could feel the stress and frustration jump off the page as I read it.

I guess I just feel helpless because I don't know what to do to help either of these people and I want to make sure I don't get sucked into the black hole of doing nothing but work 24x7.

Thanks for the opportunity to vent...

You are right; it seems to be the norm right now. Honestly, this is one of the reasons I want to be completely debt-free (house and all). In my opinion, debt can keep people in jobs that affect their mental and physical well-being.

I hear you! My work has been super busy too...I work in a medical office with 5 doctors and 2 therapists....we have been short staffed (due to a co-worker's surgery), we are going to be going to a new computer system in the next 3 to 6 months, and we have 2 gals that are pregnant and due 5 weeks apart....this is going to be one stressful year for sure....hang in there and vent anytime!

Last year our boss laid-off one of the other gals due to $$. Not replacing a worker puts more work on everybody else. At least I am lucky enough to love my job.

It is so true that many do not have work in this economy, which leads to a lot of stress... but then there is also often significant stress in the workplace, too. It just depends on where you are spending your time, I guess. You can have the stress of lack of income, no health insurance, and all of that, or you can have the stress of many workplaces. I think that some stress is going to be there, no matter what... it's about how we handle it.
