Final Lookback: Contrary1

March 22nd, 2011 at 05:02 pm

I started this thinking I would do 6 lookbacks, 1 for each year I've been at SA. I guess technically I have an extra because of Fern, but I'll leave it as is and make this my final one.

Contrary 1 had a really interesting blog. From what I gather, she lived on a farm (and posted about the dead cow next door as landscaping - LOL!!), and took care of foster children, including an autistic child. She was always an active participant in the challenges, and her posts were always down to earth and relevant. She stopped posting in October 2007 after close to 2 years of regular posting, at a point when she seemed to be dealing with medical issues in her family and the death of her dog.

One other thing about her - she lived in the Pacific NW. It's not always clear where people on this site live, but it seems like we have a bunch of bloggers from up that way...

Any memories of Contrary1?

Also, who did I miss? I thought about DivaJen, who seems to have her own successful site going at Divatribe, and Kashi, whom I'm friends with on Facebook. I thought about BA but he's still lurking, and hopefully he'll start back up. Others?

I didn't know what to expect when I started these entries and am thrilled with the response that it's gotten from everyone. I'm glad that I was able to bring back some good memories!

I really miss Sue (Contrary1). She was close to me geographically and we often talked about meeting up but never did. Did her blog end up getting deleted at some point? I looked for it when I came back here and didn't find it.

Here it is Robin. For some reason, she doesn't show up on the list of retired blogs, but when I enter her username right after http, I get to it. Same with DivaJen and others.

She was one of my favorites - she offered me insightful comments both for my work in special ed, and when I was in the midst of taking care of my mother, who had Alzheimer's disease. She wrote often of learning much of her frugal ways from her father, which was similar to me (our fathers were similarly aged, grew up during the Depression, served in WWII, etc.) I miss her blog - am I thinking she ended up needing to care for a relative?

Another great choice - what a fun look back! Some other blogs that were from the "era" that I looked forward to reading included, as you mentioned, DivaJen (a teacher with a family in CA, I think, who had a fun blog,) and also Cercis (from Canada I think, with a couple kids of near the ages of mine and a similar lifestyle)and LRJohnson (I loved reading about how she challenged herself to live within a minimum wage amount to see if she could, and her exception for spending beyond min wage included traveling to wonderful places, which she shared with pics in her blog.)

Plus, can I mention yours?? You were another blog that I enjoyed reading about, with a family and working and all. Yours and the others are what helped me decide to take the blogging plunge :-)

Looking back, I've also been curious about what's happened to many of them. In some cases, you could see that they posted less frequently, then just faded away. But in other cases they were posting frequently right up until the end and then just stopped altogether. I hope that they're all doing well...

I miss contrary1 too. Turns out that ten years ago she had worked in the neighborhood that I live in.

I met kashi - what fun! She gave me an insight - she stopped posting when she found that she was writing about the same issues over and over. I feel that way myself. But you know that's life - even Samuel Pepys wrote about the same things over and over again. Hope she is enjoying her photography and making a go of it.

I miss Paulette, otherwise known as Quid Me Vexari. She lives near me somewhere in North Seattle, but if you are posting intimate financial detail it just didn't seem right to go figure exactly where. I hope she, her son, and her DH are doing all right.
