Water water everywhere...

March 13th, 2011 at 03:41 am

I have to take a break from my trip down memory lane for a night to get back to reality. With all of the rain that north NJ has gotten, we had a few inches of water in the basement. Our hot water heater also died, which happened during another flood (to the tune of $1200). We called in "the guy" to look at it, and turns out that the pilot light needed to be relit. There was enough water to cover the air vents, so there was not enough oxygen to keep it lit. $55 for the fix, but considering that I was expecting $1200, I'm pretty happy.

With that problem resolved, we had a bit of cleanup to do today. Mostly sucking all of the water up with a pump. It'll take some time to completely dry out, but we're not expecting rain for the next several days. We've also vowed to actually throw out all of the junk downstairs that should have been tossed long ago!

Went out to dinner unexpectedly tonight. DD had her basketball finals and a big soccer game today, and she did great at both! They lost the soccer game 1-0, but she absolutely played the game of her life. I'm so proud of her. I told her to really soak in the way it feels to know she did the very best she could, and leave it all out on the floor because win or lose, that's what matters. I can honestly say that in 12 years, I don't think I've ever seen her rise to the occasion like she did tonight. The game ended late (8:00) and so we went out to dinner to celebrate. Worth every dime...

Back to my list tomorrow, along with a trip to dad's.

I'm sorry you were affected by the floods. I work for a school district that has a sending-receiving agreement with another town. The sending town is under water. I feel so bad because some of my students had to stay with their friends for a few days. I know some parts of Morris County have been devastated by the heavy rain. Luckily, not my town.

Around here where i live in CT, it's apparently very commonplace for flooded out homeowners to call the fire dept, which will come and do the cleanup work for you.

i got thru it pretty well, just some damp areas on the concrete floor near where it meets the walls. I have those french drains inside, exterior foundation draings and a sump pump, which has been going on regularly.

NJDeb, glad you're ok. Patient saver, researching sump pumps is next on our list! (Which is what we said last time, but this time for real!)

In our area sump pumps are required and even now require a certification they are working when you sell a home. You'll appreciate having one!

I like that you can see the positive of tossing what should have been tossed in the past.

I hope there wasn't anything too sentimental in the basement that got ruined.
