Poland Spring Ripoff

August 24th, 2006 at 08:20 pm

Let me preface this by acknowledging that bottled water in general is a ripoff. That said, hubby likes Poland Spring bottled water, in the clear plastic gallon. (I can push hubby only so far with the whole frugal thing before he balks).

The regular Poland Spring gallon (in the milk-type container) is $1.39/gallon. When they came out with the clear plastic gallon, the price was raised to $1.59/gallon. Last week in the store, I saw they discontinued the clear gallon jugs in favor of 3-liter (~53 oz) clear plastic jugs that are easier to handle, but they're CHARGING THE SAME PRICE! They're giving you 17% less water!

So inspired by everyone on this site, I called Poland Spring and told them that I preferred the old design, and can't believe they're charging the same price. They thanked me profusely for my comments and said they'd pass it along to the marketing department. They did take my name and address, so maybe I'll get a coupon or two in the future, but I'm not holding my breath.

I did make some progress with Hubby, though, because when I showed him the bottle and told him it was the same price, he agreed to switch to Dannon water...

As an aside, does anyone use Brita filters? My SIL likes them, but the refills seem pretty expensive, too, and I'm not sure it would be any less than bottled water...

We used them at our previous house. They seemed to work well, and the filters lasted quite awhile. I have rebates for the filters from BB&B if you need.

I bought a genesis distilled that makes purified water. I have used it almost every day for 10 years and it has really paid for itself many times over. I think it was around $100. I usually make a big jug a day cause my dh and I drink water all day.

I cant help much here...our water has boron in it and you cant boil or filter it out...so we are at the mercy of bottled water for drinking Frown

We use Brita filters. As for the cost, it just depends on how much use you get out of it. One filter lasts us 3 months. And if you can pick them up at Costco (or Wal-mart and get an off brand that will work) it works out to be even less. I'm pretty happy with the Brita but I'd be just as happy with Pur or any other that lets you do it at home. I prefer cold water so I like the in the fridge type of pitchers as opposed to something you connect to the faucet.

There is always the evil solution - filter your tap water with the Brita filters then put the filtered water in a Poland Spring containers.

I gave up bottled water and filtered water a while ago. I still have my Brita, but just don't use it right now. When I moved, I moved to a palce where the tap water tasts good, as long as it is cold enough. So, I keep ice cubes in the freeze anda jug of tap water in the fridge all the time.

I've used the Pur filter system for years. I have a large rectangular pitcher in the fridge. I use it constantly. I can't imagine drinking tap water, but I hate buying bottled water, so it's a good compromise. Three filters, $30, and one lasts 2-3 months.
