Weekend Wedding

July 16th, 2006 at 10:06 pm

We went to a wedding yesterday. It was 2 1/2 hours away, so we stayed over at the hotel, which made for a pretty expensive night, between the hotel, the gas, and the gift. And the wedding wasn't even that great. They had the ceremony outdoors, but had no tents set up. (Hello...it's the middle of July, thunderstorms happen all the time. I'm all for containing costs, but splurge for the tents!). Needless to say, it started raining about 5 minutes before the ceremony, and stopped 5 minutes after the ceremony. (A sign from above? I'm not sure). Luckily most people had umbrellas, and there was some cover. The reception was just ok, food and music wise. I'm glad it's over!

As an aside, can anyone comment as to how they decide on a wedding gift? We almost always give money, because that's what most young people need and want, but how to you determine the amount? Do you always give the same? Do you base it on the cost of the place? I left this up to hubby because it was his friend, but I'm curious how other people decide...

Went grocery shopping today and did pretty well. I spent more than my weekly goal, but got some pretty good buys thanks to loss leaders, and should be well set for a while.

I'm hoping for a quiet week this week. I have a haircut and color on Tuesday. I had to cancel my appointment from 2 weeks ago because of work and my grays are REALLY showing. I'm reading Flash's and Diva Jen's experiences with the home hair color closely, but I'm a big chicken when it comes to this. I always worry that my hair will end up green! It would be great to save the $105 bill every 7 weeks, though, so I may need to get over myself!

I have always colored my hair, with no problem. I think today's hair coloring kits are much better than in the past and easier to use. It is hard to go wrong. And, one way to think of it, if your hair turns green, you will be right in with the younger crowd.

Wow, it costs that much!! I have been coloring my hair for the past 35 years and it always looks fine. I was griping that the hair color cost so much, $7 if not on sale. Well, now I know I have been saving over a $100 every time. I do it about every 2 weeks, so I have saved, $21,000.

The only problem I ever had was when I went from a real light brown to a dark brown...I guess it was more than 2 shades darker and my hair was JET BLACK. Otherwise, Ive never encountered a really wierd color doing it myself.

I don't color my hair Smile...
I've been soul searching as to what to give as a wedding gift. I'm not a money sort of person, especially if I think they are probably making more than I am, or are being supported by their parents. And the bridal registry just leaves me cold...

I almost always give money at weddings - but it does vary depending on how well I know the person (i.e. best friend vs. distant cousin) and even location. Around here (rural area), $50 is a decent gift (the gifts for my wedding ranged from $10 to $100, a few higher gifts from close family). However, when I attended weddings on Long Island, where some of my family lives, I give a bit more because it's expected ($100-150). The cost of living (and weddings) is so much higher there.
My brother is getting married next month and I have to do some hard thinking over what to get them..something personal, but useful and meaningful too...hmmm.
