Why I could never EBAY full-time

May 15th, 2006 at 04:31 am

So this woman contacted me and was interested in buying some books I had listed at half.com. Then she tells me that she's actually interested in ALL of the books in the series that I had (29 in all). She asked me to calculate the total bill + shipping and I got back to her with an email Saturday afternoon. Then, NOTHING. So I send her another email on Sunday to make sure she got my email and wanted to go forward. She finally sends me an email at 9:00 Sunday night to say sorry, she actually found some books at a discount store that she bought instead, but she'd keep me in mind for future purchases (don't bother!).

HELLO? She contacts me, she knows how much the books are because they're listed at half.com, I get back to her in record time, then she bags it, after we agreed in principle and were just working out the details. Is it me or is that totally rude? Not to mention deflating because I was really looking forward to the contribution to my challenge account.

So I realize that I could never do the ebay thing full-time. It's just too frustrating when you run into people like this. Sorry for the rant, had to get it off my chest.

Other than that, had a great Mother's Day with the kids...got some nice flowers and a gift certificate for a massage. Hope all the moms (current, future, grandmas, etc.) had a great day!

I agree. I have been met with some real pieces of work on ebay and it is very discouraging! I have just dipped my toe back in and I can't say it has been wildly successful!

I had a similar experience last september when I sold a college textbook that was worth a pretty penny. The buyer gave me the run-around for two weeks after the auction was over- saying at first that he didnt know if he needed that exact book. He then changed his mind and wanted to have it in his possession as soon as possible. I sent the textbook via fedex and everything because I wanted to make sure it got to his hands. He tried to say the book didn't arrive so I called fedex and they told me who signed for it, when they received it, what color shirt he wore, even the ID they flashed when they picked up the package. I pounded out an email in fury stating that I had complete proof that he received the package and was willing to contact authorities because I smelled fraud on his end. The guy buckled down in a flash and paid me my dues on the spot, saying that he eventually received the book when his "roommate" came back from class that day. I stopped selling on Ebay since then. Tip for the ebayers on here: Make sure you have sig confirmation when you send things to a dorm room- these college kids love to pull fast ones Frown .

I couldn't agree more. I've been so frustrated with eBay and half lately, too!

I agree that dealing with people such as you write about is very frustrating. Having run my own business and sold things through craigslist I can attest that when engaging in a business transaction you will always bump into morons. No matter how great you are on your end or proffessional etc. the other side will do something rude or worse. Not every customer of course but enough. Good luck.
